The Meeting in Chapter 5 of Lord of the Flies

In a paragraph explain the role of one character in the meeting depicted in chapter five. Make sure your paragraph consists of seven or more sentences. Be specific. Refer to exact words if possible. Consider the character's whole role--from the beginning of the chapter to the end. Also, make sure you consider the literal and symbolic meanings of the character's role in the meeting. Finally, if you're going to write about the littluns consider them all (Phil, Percival,...)

Ralph has a major part in this assembly that occurred in chapter five. His major role is to be the chief. He was voted to be the chief by everybody so he’s the one who organized this meeting. Also he’s trying to get the island to go well and to run efficiently. He feels that he is putting in a lot more effort than everyone else. So he put together this meeting to confront the situation. His role is to reason with everybody and to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Unfortunately that’s not what happened.

Jack is a very important character throughout the book but especially during the meeting in chapter five. Jack’s role is to hunt and provide food. He does hunt but also tries to act like the chief of the island. When the lilluns speak their concern about the beast, Jack reassured them that if there was one, he would hunt it and kill it. Even though he does not believe that there are beast or monsters, he says he will still hunt them to the lilluns to make them feel some comfort and end their concerns. The meeting for Jack was for him to show the other boys hunting and providing food is a key factor. Also to gain some power and make decisions.

In the meeting in chapter five Jack tries to gain as much credit with the boys as possible. By offering them immediate, short term gratification he lures them into following him, as opposed to Ralph who offers a more civil lifestyle with a plan. During the meeting Jack antagonizes ralph by calling him a coward and useless in hopes that a mutiny would occur in which case Jack would seize control. Jack appeals to the instinct of the boys and therefore represents the boys reverting to their basic instinct merely to oppose Ralph.

In chapter 5 Ralph hold a meeting and one littun mentions there being a monster on the island. He suggests that this monster is under the water during the day and comes out at night. While the other boys argue this theory Simon suggests that “What I mean is….maybe (the monster) is us”, the boys take this as a joke and laugh it off but Simon is the only one that understands his own nature. All the other boys seem to start being disconnected from civilization and maybe start realizing their own nature. But Simon seems to already be aware of his own nature by realizing there is no beast but themselves. Jack later the boys run away with jack after he torments piggy and claims he would hunt the beast. Simon and piggy are the only ones who stay with Ralph; he claims to relinquish his leadership role but simon and piggy talk him out of it.

After reading chapter five, The character that caught my attetion from beginning to end was Jack.
His signifigant role stood out to me the most amongst them all because he knows how to manipulate the younger boys as well as the older ones by increaseingly filling their heads with nonscence.Stateing, the beast does in fact exist and they must take action immetiately. As a result the boys become fearful of the beast and feel helpless,so they think in order to stay safe, they need to stick with jack and his hunters rather than risk their lives to uphold the groups rules, with ralph- the one boy who speaks truth, statagies and gains power, unlike jack who lies, scares the boys and wins power. Throughout the chapter Jacks main role is to seek power, and by that he uses the beast as his primary source.

The person who plays a major role is Ralph. Ralph is the one that had called for the meeting. He was trying to restore order. By blowing that conch it means that he is chief. That he did not want Piggy to blow the conch because Ralph was the one that wanted to keep the order. Ralph is starting to lose control especially when the littluns bring up the beast again. Ralph is starting to worry because the kids are starting to follow Jack. Ralph is doing his best to be a good leader by demanding jobs and trying to list what is important such as the fire. It is hard to do since the kids are starting to become savages. Ralph has a hard job of being chief off the group.

In chapter five Jack comes into play with a lot. Jack is the groups provider of food. He is the hunter and tries to act like his the one in charge of everything. Jack also tries to make everyone become under the impression that everything is fine and that he will protect them completely. He tries to make everyone comfortable with his idea that there really isn't a monster, but if by some odd chance there was he would step up take the lead and kill the beast.

One person who has a major role in the meeting who be Jack. Jack has a major role because the whol etime during the meeting he would try and dismiss many things like the conch shells power or if there is a beast from the water the hunters will kill it. He shows us that the meeting was only there for kids who cannot do the physical activies like him and his hunters. He felt that Ralph should not be considered a leader because of his lack hunting skills.
